Morocco’s Energy Minister Advocates Royal Vision for Clean Energy at IAEA Meeting

Rabat: In a statement to MAP on the sidelines of the second ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Benali noted that the high-level meeting “provided an excellent platform to present HM King Mohammed VI’s long-term vision, may God assist Him.”

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the Sovereign’s vision has positioned Morocco as a key player in clean energy since the adoption of its energy strategy in 2009, with a strong focus on renewable energies and civil nuclear power. Benali reiterated Morocco’s active role in the IAEA and its commitment to multilateralism, emphasizing the need for cooperative approaches to advance fusion technology. She highlighted the technological and financial challenges of fusion energy, noting the extreme temperatures and significant funding required.

Benali stressed the potential of fusion energy to meet global needs by 2050, provided it can compete with renewable energies. She called for increased research and development in fusion to promote collaboration and partnerships, particularly to benefit nations in the Global South.

The three-day WFEG ministerial meeting at the Tianfu International Conference Center in Chengdu serves as a platform to reaffirm the role of science and technology in global peace and prosperity. The gathering brings together ministers, scientists, and energy sector stakeholders to discuss strategies for developing and experimenting with fusion energy.
