Montr©al: During this event, which runs through October 3rd, the Kingdom is represented by a large delegation led by Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh. The ICAO assembly will discuss the development of the civil aviation sector, as well as several other issues relating to safety, security, sustainability, technological innovation, regulation, and human resources training.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the 42nd Assembly of this United Nations organization will also discuss the Strategic Plan for 2026-2050, a roadmap defining the future of international aviation. Under the theme ‘Safe Skies, Sustainable Future,’ the strategic plan outlines ICAO’s vision for the next 25 years, driven by three essential aspirations: reaching zero fatalities from aviation accidents, achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 for international civil aviation operations, and positioning aviation as a vital part of a connected, accessible, inclusive, and affordable global transport system.
For Morocco, this meeting is an opportunity to present the Kingdom’s candidacy for membership in the ICAO Council, reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to playing an active and constructive role in the global governance of civil aviation, particularly in Africa. On the sidelines of this event, whose opening ceremony took place in the presence of Morocco’s ambassador to Canada, Souriya Otmani, Morocco will be awarded, for the first time, a certificate from the President of the ICAO Council, in recognition of the progress made by the Kingdom in establishing an effective safety oversight system and improving the effective implementation of ICAO standards and practices.
Speaking at the opening of the Assembly, ICAO Council President Salvatore Sciacchitano laid out an ambitious vision for transforming global aviation to meet unprecedented growth and challenges. “The world is watching, and future generations will live with the legacy we create here,” Sciacchitano told the more than 3,000 registered delegates gathered in Montr©al. “A system currently built to serve 4.6 billion passengers will not accommodate three times that number, unless we ensure its transformation,” he pointed out.
Referring to the organization’s strategic plan for air transport, the Council President underlined that “through cooperation and consensus, zero fatalities is achievable, net-zero carbon emissions is achievable, and inclusive growth is achievable.” The ICAO Assembly is the Organization’s sovereign body. It meets at least once every three years and is convened by ICAO’s governing body, the Council. ICAO’s 193 Member States and a large number of international organizations are invited to the Assembly, which establishes the worldwide policy of the Organization for the upcoming triennium. During Assembly Sessions, ICAO’s complete work programme in the technical, economic, legal, and technical cooperation fields is reviewed in detail.
