Ait Messaoudene Engages in Strategic Talks with IAEA Chief on Nuclear Cooperation

Algiers: Minister of Health, Mohamed Esseddik At Messaoud¨ne, held a pivotal meeting with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to explore avenues for expanding bilateral cooperation. The discussions, which took place on Monday at the ministry’s headquarters, were attended by several central administration officials.

According to Algeria Press Service, the meeting aimed at enhancing cooperation between Algeria and the IAEA, focusing on the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the medical field, particularly for cancer diagnosis and treatment. The discussions included supporting training programs in nuclear medicine and therapy, preparing training programs for doctors and medical device operators.

Further discussions addressed opportunities to establish reference centers, such as the Cancer Control Center at Bab El Oued University Hospital, which would serve as hubs for training and expertise transfer. These initiatives also aim to train Algerian trainers in collaboration with the agency’s experts, with aspirations to extend such programs across the African continent.

The minister highlighted Algeria’s strategic importance on its partnership with the IAEA, emphasizing the country’s commitment to sharing expertise and knowledge with African nations in this crucial sector. Grossi praised the strong cooperation with Algeria and expressed admiration for the competence of its medical and scientific personnel. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to supporting training and technical development programs in Algeria.
