5th World Sufism Congress Kicks Off in Fez

Rabat: The 5th World Sufism Congress has commenced in Fez, organized by the International Academic Center of Sufi and Aesthetic Studies (IACSAS) under the theme “Purification science: The Edification of Man and the preservation of nations.” The event will see participation from more than 400 speakers representing 30 countries.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, scholars from regions including Morocco, Nigeria, Chad, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, Senegal, the United Kingdom, the United States, as well as countries in the Middle East and Asia, have emphasized the Moroccan model’s role in promoting moderate Islam. In this model, Sufism acts as a barrier against radicalization by highlighting its unique approach.

The organizers have expressed that this year’s theme underscores the dedication of Sufi masters to achieving divine edification through purification, known as Tazkiya. This approach focuses on inner transformation, turning individuals into vessels for divine knowledge. Sufism remains a core component of Moroccan religiosity, integrating Maliki jurisprudence, Ash’arism doctrine, and Al-Junaid Sufism.

During the two-day congress, various sessions will address topics such as “Sufism and the consolidation of active citizenship values,” “Moroccan Sufis in the service of Islam,” and “Sufism and the struggle for the purification of the human soul.” Other discussions will explore the balance between material and spiritual aspects, Sufism’s role in civilizational development, and the impact of Moroccan female Sufism.

The congress will conclude with a series of recommendations, and a tribute will be offered to notable figures in Moroccan and international Sufism who are present at the event.
