Victory Day: French occupation crimes cannot fall into oblivion nor be extinguished by prescription

ALGIERS- President of the Republic Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Friday that the crimes of French colonialism against Algerian people “cannot fall into oblivion nor be extinguished by prescription,” stressing that “handling in a responsible, honest and impartial way the ‘Memory and History’ issue, in a climate of frankness and trust, is essential.”

In a message marking the Victory Day (March 19th), President Tebboune said that “on this memorable day, a prelude to the victory, the Algerian people have drawn strength and determination to face the impact of a large-scale destruction, a violent massive destruction that had shown the heinous crimes of colonialism and that cannot fall into oblivion nor be extinguished by prescription.”

“Handling in a responsible, honest and impartial way the Memory and History issue, in a climate of frankness and trust, is essential.”

President Tebboune said the issue “is at the heart of our concerns… and we will continue tirelessly the completion of our efforts, insisting on our country’s right to recover its archives, know the fate of those disappeared during the Glorious War of Liberation (1954-1962) and ensure the indemnification of the victims of the nuclear tests and other relevant issues… out of loyalty to the message of our brave martyrs.”
