US Justice Dept. proposes rulemaking for firearms possession

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) Thursday announced it has submitted to the Federal Register a notice of proposed rulemaking for firearms possession.

A Department statement said the notice would clarify the circumstances in which a person is “engaged in the business” of dealing in firearms and thus required to obtain a license and run background checks.

Commenting on the move, the White House said today that as a result of the Executive Order and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the Department of Justice is taking “life-saving” action to reduce the number of guns sold without background checks and keep guns out of the hands of criminals.

Legislation at federal, state, and local levels has long attempted to address gun violence in the United States through a number of methods, including the aforementioned proposal.
