Commander of the Sudanese Army Abdelfattah Al-Burhan indicated on Thursday that a crushing defeat of his foes is necessary to spare the nation partition.
“We are all facing a war that we must decisively conclude; otherwise Sudan will be disintegrated,” said Burhan, addressing a police force in Port Sudan.
He called for bringing into account “culprits of crimes perpetrated in Khartoum and Darfur,” and called on his antagonists, the Rapid Support Forces, to hand over their arms.
Burhan has been leading the regular forces against the irregulars since the two sides hit snags in talks over some measures to hand over authority to a civilian rule. One of the main sticking points was the merger of the irregulars into the army.
On the fronts, the army troops and the rapid forces engaged in renewed fighting in Khartoum and several regions.
At least 3,000 people have died since fighting erupted on April 10.
