Sudan warring parties vow commitment to renewed truce

Sudan’s armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have vowed to observe the new humanitarian ceasefire brokered by Saudi Arabia and the US.

The nationwide truce, which went into effect at 6am (04:00 GMT) on Sunday, will last until June 21, according to a joint statement from Riyadh and Washington.

The Sudanese army said in a statement late Saturday that it would commit itself to the renewed truce, but warned that it would respond to any potential violation.

In a similar statement, the paramilitary forces vowed that they would observe the ceasefire nationwide only out of humanitarian considerations, chiefly aid and hospital access.

The US and Saudi Arabia have been mediating between Sudan’s warring parties for weeks, and multiple ceasefire agreements failed to stop the fighting.
