Algiers: Algerian scientific researcher, Prof Karim Zaghib, stressed Tuesday in Algiers the promising prospects for the development of the lithium industry in Algeria, through an industrial fabric to locally manufacture lithium batteries with the country’s mining resources.
According to Algeria Press Service, in a statement following an audience granted to him by the president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, researcher Karim Zaghib said President Tebboune listened to his proposals on the ways to develop the lithium industry in Algeria and to manufacture such batteries, through “optimum use of lithium, iron and phosphate mines.”
Lithium batteries are used in electric cars, for energy storage, and in several industries worldwide, he said, noting that such batteries are “safe” material. He added that efforts are underway, in coordination with the ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies and the Sonarem group, for the “production, at a first stage, of phosphoric acid, before the manufacturing of lithium batteries.”
Lithium industry in Algeria, he stressed, “may create over 50,000 direct jobs and 100,000 indirect jobs.” The researcher highlighted “Algeria’s huge potential in the field,” mentioning the country’s young and skilled human resources.
He added that the president of the Republic, during the audience he granted to him, expressed his full support to the efforts for lithium industry development in Algeria.
