Algiers: President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, delivered a poignant message on Wednesday in commemoration of National Memory Day, marking the 80th anniversary of the May 8, 1945 Massacres.
According to Algeria Press Service, President Tebboune’s message emphasized the significance of the May 8 uprising, which catalyzed the National Movement’s efforts against colonial oppression. He described this event as a turning point, leading to an armed struggle that sought to end colonial rule, which had inflicted severe atrocities on the Algerian people for over a century.
The President urged Algerians to reflect on this painful historical event, highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of the Algerian people. He noted that the May 8 demonstrations symbolized the people’s quest for freedom and dignity, with 45,000 martyrs sacrificing their lives in the struggle against colonialism.
President Tebboune also spoke of the commitment to preserving the legacy of those who suffered and sacrificed for Algeria’s
independence. He stressed that this legacy is integral to the nation’s identity, forged through the struggles and resistance of past generations.
The memory of those who perished in Sétif, Kherrata, Guelma, Ain Temouchent, and other towns is a testament to the Algerian people’s dedication to honoring their history and freedom. The President reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to sustainable development and its determination to secure a prominent place regionally and internationally.
He emphasized that Algeria, guided by its history and the sacrifices of its martyrs, will never allow the issue of memory to fade into oblivion. The Algerian people’s courage and resolve will continue to drive them to uphold the principles of justice and freedom.
President Tebboune concluded by reiterating the nation’s focus on enhancing the well-being of its people and promoting investments to harness Algeria’s vast potential, with the enduring inspiration from the legacy of the shuhada.
