Algiers: The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has decided not to personally attend the emergency Arab summit hosted by Egypt on March 4, which aims to address developments concerning the Palestinian cause. Instead, President Tebboune has appointed Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, to represent Algeria at the summit.
According to Algeria Press Service, this decision arises from perceived imbalances and shortcomings in the summit’s preparation process. A limited group of Arab countries has monopolized the preparation for the summit’s outcomes, excluding coordination with other Arab nations that are stakeholders in the Palestinian cause. This approach has reportedly led to President Tebboune’s dissatisfaction, as it appears to create a division among countries concerning support for the Palestinian cause.
The source highlighted that the President is concerned about the inclusion of some countries while excluding others, suggesting that support for the Palestinian cause should not be monopolized. Algeria has consistently advocated for Arab unity and collective support for the Palestinian cause, especially in light of the existential challenges threatening the Palestinian national project.
Algeria remains committed to using its position at the Security Council to defend the Palestinian cause, positioning itself as a truthful and supportive Arab voice that champions the rights of the oppressed without seeking recognition or reward. Nonetheless, it expresses regret over the current state of the Arab nation.
