President Tebboune Calls for Holistic Approach to Combating Drugs

Algiers: The president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, called at a Council of Ministers meeting he chaired Sunday for the adoption of a comprehensive approach in the fight against drugs. This approach would begin by establishing mechanisms to curb this issue through awareness-raising, monitoring, and treatment, alongside taking coercive measures and imposing the toughest penalties against drug traffickers and consumers, the Council of Ministers said in a statement.

According to Algeria Press Service, President Tebboune emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to combat drugs and psychotropic substances. This strategy would involve setting up mechanisms to reduce this issue through awareness-raising, monitoring, and treatment, as well as implementing coercive measures and imposing severe penalties against drug traffickers and consumers, especially those dealing with hard drugs, to protect the youth from this threat, which is considered foreign to Algerian society.

President Tebboune highlighted that Algeria is facing an “undeclared war” by “evil forces” targeting the country from its western and southern borders, using various types of drugs to weaken the youth and undermine Algerian social values that the country strives to preserve.

The President of the Republic also called for an in-depth study and discussions on the national strategy and the bill on the prevention of drugs and psychotropic substances, emphasizing its importance as a matter of national security, the statement concluded.
