The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune stressed the need to give new impetus to the information sector laying the foundations of a strong and influential press, stressing the importance of putting order within the corporation and uniting under the banner of unions and bodies representing journalists.
During his periodic interview broadcast Saturday evening on national television and radio stations, the Head of State expressed his conviction of the need to give new impetus to the information sector, stressing that the media institution “strengthens democracy.”
“Without a responsible and professional press, we will not get very far,” said President Tebboune who recalled that the Constitution of 2020 supports the rights of the press and promotes freedom of expression.
He underlined the need to have “great national media institutions capable of thwarting the enemies of the homeland and countering external attacks against the country because it is a school that forms generations and helps to enlighten public opinion,” regretting the focus of the Algerian media on local events and the absence of a specialized press.
In this regard, he urged the national media, especially the public, to redeploy and improve their performance, stressing the importance of the media presence of Algeria in Africa through the opening of offices for public media.
Recalling the importance of the phase of evaluation and recovery of the national press to kick off the building process, President Tebboune invited journalists to hold meetings, to unite under the banner of a strong union organization, and to create a higher body of professional ethics, which will allow them to raise their concerns to the government and avoid any possible legal action.
Referring to the latest report of “Reporters Without Borders” (RSF), the President of the Republic said, “We are aware of the behind-the-scenes of these kinds of rankings.”
“The only ranking to be taken into account is that of the United Nations (UN) known for the impartiality of its institutions,” assured the President of the Republic, before rebounding on the words of this NGO citing Algerian journalists in prison for their opinions, saying that this is “false information”
After paying tribute to the memory of Algerian journalists, victims of barbaric terrorism, President Tebboune called on journalists to “show a high sense of patriotism.”
