Morocco’s Strategic Role in Atlantic Drug Trafficking Interception Highlighted by Spanish Expert

Madrid: The interception of a vessel transporting about 3,000 kilograms of cocaine west of the Canary Islands this week showcases the effective coordination between Moroccan and Spanish police services, along with French, U.S., U.K., and Portuguese authorities in combating international narcotics trafficking, Esparza Machín told MAP.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Moroccan security services have demonstrated their capability to provide strategic intelligence, enhance cooperation with multiple countries, and intervene in complex cases, underscoring the Kingdom’s crucial role in securing maritime routes between Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Esparza Machín emphasized that counter-terrorism and the fight against international drug trafficking and illegal immigration are shared responsibilities that require a multilateral framework and a cooperative approach.

The Spanish Tax Agency’s Customs Surveillance Service and the Spanish Civil Guard, with Morocco’s assistance, intercepted a tugboat named ‘S
ky White’ on Wednesday. The vessel was carrying approximately 3,000 kilograms of cocaine, divided into 80 packages of varying sizes.

The successful operation was a result of international cooperation among police services from Morocco, France, the U.S., the U.K., and Portugal, as well as the Intelligence Center for Counter-Terrorism and Organized Crime (CITCO) and the Maritime Analysis and Operation Centre – Narcotics (MAOC-N), according to a statement from the Spanish Customs Surveillance Service (DAVA).
