Indonesian Pres. urges ASEAN to unite to contribute to regional peace, development

Indonesian President Joko Widodo called on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Wednesday to unite to contribute to regional peace and development.

Widodo, addressing the opening of the ASEAN summit in Indonesia, said he was confident the 10-member organization could deal with growing international challenges “if its members are united.

“We need to improve level of cooperation to keep ASEAN as a core of growth because our economic potentials are huge,” he said.

He ASEAN “should be grateful” because the region succeeded in confronting coronavirus in the past three years but “there are still big challenges ahead of us because of the growing geopolitical risks coupled with collapse of many financial institutions in the US and the world.” Indonesia is hosting the 42nd ASEAN summit.
