EP Cmte approves package to allow French-Algeria negotiation on judicial cooperation

BRUSSELS, – The European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee approved on Tuesday a package allowing France to negotiate a bilateral agreement with Algeria on judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters and family law matters.

The approval was passed with 23 votes for, no votes against and no abstentions, noting that the civil and commercial matters agreement aims to modernize and consolidate countries cooperation on judicial areas by aligning provisions with EU standards and allowing modern technology uses.

The Committee said in a press release that the family law agreement concerns recognition of decisions such as divorce, separation, parental responsibility or child abduction, adding that once confirmed by EU bodies it will not apply to other EU member states.

Today’s Committee decision needs to be confirmed by the full European Parliament plenary at one of its upcoming sessions.
