The summit of the Council of Europe (CoE) on Wednesday announced the establishment of the Register of Damage Caused by Russia in the war against Ukraine.
Some 43 countries and the European Union (EU) have joined or indicated their intention to join the Register set up by the participants to the Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe held in Reykjavik, Iceland, on May 16-17, CoE said in a press release.
CoE Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric said, “The decision to set up the Register of Damage under the auspices of the Council of Europe is an historic decision.” The Register will have its seat in The Hague the Netherlands and is established for an initial period of three years. It serves as a record of evidence and claims information on damage, loss or injury caused by Russia’s war against Ukraine. It paves the way towards a future international comprehensive compensation mechanism for the victims of war, it noted.
CoE based in the French city of Strasbourg was founded in 1949 at the end of World War II to protect human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe. It has 46 member states.
