Call for Developing Farm Cooperatives, Combating Land Fragmentation

Algiers: Participants in the workshops organized within the framework of the National Conference on Agricultural Modernization, held Monday in Algiers, called for developing agricultural cooperatives and encouraging farmers to join them, by fighting against land fragmentation in order to stimulate agricultural investment and direct it towards national needs.

According to Algeria Press Service, during the workshop on clarifying and regulating land tenure for agricultural holdings to promote investment and rural development, attended by officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, the participants urged greater farmer participation in agricultural cooperatives, emphasizing their crucial importance and proven track record in many developed nations’ agricultural sectors.

The participants highlighted that attracting farmers to agricultural operations requires implementing a range of incentives, including strengthening cooperative activities and easing credit access. They also stre
ssed the importance of giving farmers the authority to determine crop allocations and manage the marketing process.

The issue of legally and effectively reclaiming unused state-owned farmland and redistributing it promptly and regularly was also discussed, with calls for consolidating agricultural parcels and preventing land fragmentation.

The Director General of the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office (OAIC) spoke at the workshop on intensifying and improving production in strategic sectors to boost yields and ensure sustainable food security. He called for encouraging seed production and development while establishing a mechanism for farmers to share experiences, especially regarding agriculture in the southern provinces.
