Algerian Council of Ministers Approves Provincial Status Upgrade and Major Development Projects

Algiers: The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Sunday, focusing on the promotion of administrative districts in the High Plateaus and the South to full provincial status. The meeting also included progress updates on significant projects across multiple sectors, as stated in a press release from the Council of Ministers.

According to Algeria Press Service, the President of the Republic, in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defence, reviewed the government’s activities over the past two weeks. After interventions from various ministers, he issued several directives. Among these were an investigation into recent forest fires, a draft plan to increase the National Minimum Wage and unemployment benefits, and the mandatory compliance with hygiene standards for transport vehicles.

The Council approved the elevation of eleven administrative districts to full provincial status. These districts include Aflou, Barika, Ksar Chellala, Messaad, An Oussara, Bou Saada, El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh, El Kantara, Bir El Ater, Ksar El Boukhari, and El Aricha. Administrative procedures for this elevation will commence immediately in coordination with both Houses of Parliament.

The President also directed that the Tindouf-Bechar mining railway line be inaugurated in January 2026, marking a significant development milestone for Algeria. Concurrently, the Gara Djebilet mine development project is set to commence local iron ore extraction in the first quarter of 2026, aiming to enhance Algeria’s economic sovereignty and resource diversification.

Additionally, the Council approved the construction of a 500-bed University Hospital Center in Constantine and the procurement of specialized equipment for the Digital Development Support Enterprise. The meeting concluded with the approval of various decrees and appointments in senior government positions.
