Morocco Powers Europe’s Best-Selling Cars, French Economic Daily Writes

Rabat: Renault, Morocco’s leading car manufacturer, produced 413,600 units last year at its sites in Casablanca and Tangier, accounting for three-quarters of Renault vehicles assembled in the country. The Casablanca site focuses on models such as the Dacia Sandero, Logan, and Renault Kardian, while the Tangier site primarily produces the Dacia Sandero, Jogger, and Renault Express.

According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, 80% of Renault’s production in Morocco is exported to Europe, particularly to France, Spain, Italy, and Germany. Christophe Dridi, Industrial Director at Dacia, highlighted that the Moroccan-made Sandero was the best-selling car in Europe across all models last year. The French economic daily, La Tribune, also noted the popularity of the family estate Jogger in Europe, produced entirely in Tangier since last June. The Tangier plant, inaugurated in 2012 and employing 7,000 people, is now Renault’s largest industrial site worldwide.

The report also mentions Stellantis’s factory in Kenitra, which produced 175,000 vehicles last year, including the Peugeot 208 and electric microcars like the Citro«n Ami. In November 2022, Stellantis announced a £300 million investment to double its capacity to 400,000 units per year by producing new small cars starting next year, with this expansion inaugurated in mid-July.

Christophe Dridi, quoted by La Tribune, emphasized Morocco as an entire ecosystem with locally based suppliers. He noted that Renault’s local integration rate has reached 65%, while Stellantis aims for 75% by 2030.
