Berrechid: India’s Defense Minister, Singh, inaugurated the country’s first overseas defense production unit in Morocco, marking a significant milestone in the strategic partnership between India and Morocco. The facility, located in the Berrechid industrial zone, is set to produce WhAP 8‚¬€8 armored combat vehicles and will serve as a hub for defense research, design, and industry.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, the plant is a result of an investment agreement signed in September 2024 between Morocco’s National Defense Administration, the Indian Ministry of Defense, and TATA Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This collaborative effort aims to strengthen Morocco’s industrial capacity in the defense sector. The ceremony was attended by key Moroccan officials, including the Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of the National Defense Administration, Abdeltif Loudyi, and the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour.
The new facility is designed to attract young talent, foster innovation, and develop technologies beneficial to both nations. Singh expressed his gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan government for their support, emphasizing that this venture will stimulate technological and industrial cooperation between Rabat and New Delhi. Tata Advanced Systems CEO Sukaran Singh highlighted the plant’s strategic importance, stating it represents a lasting commitment to innovation and shared development.
Initiated under the High Royal Directives, the project seeks to equip Morocco with industrial and technological autonomy in defense, while acting as a catalyst for developing an innovative industrial ecosystem. The facility is expected to create skilled jobs and contribute to both countries’ defense capabilities, targeting not only the Royal Armed Forces but also high-potential international markets.
