Algeria Criticizes Mali’s ICJ Petition as a “Stratagem”

Nairobi: Algeria has denounced the “shameless” nature of a petition filed by Mali with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on September 16, describing it as a “stratagem,” and emphasizing its intention to notify the ICJ of its rejection of this request in due course, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs said Friday in a statement.

According to Algeria Press Service, the Malian government announced that on September 4, 2025, it filed a petition initiating proceedings against Algeria with the International Court of Justice. At a press conference held on September 13, the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad and African Affairs denied this allegation.

Faced with this false statement, the statement indicated that the Malian authorities decided to file the request on September 16, as announced in a statement issued by the International Court of Justice. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes a striking paradox in Mali’s approa
ch, highlighting that the Malian junta, which has disregarded legality and constitutional order domestically, is now concerned about international law to which it falsely claims commitment.

Furthermore, the Ministry notes that the very junta has led Mali into political, economic, and security disaster, and is itself the instigator of moral bankruptcy. Its action at the International Court of Justice is seen as an attempt to exploit the United Nations judicial body in a bid to find a scapegoat to absolve its responsibilities in the crisis affecting Mali.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the artifice is too unsubtle to be convincing, and that Algeria will not be complicit in it, denouncing its shameless nature. Algeria maintains a high regard for international law and respect for the International Court of Justice, and it sees it as a duty not to allow them to be subjects of such a diversion.
