Security Council Extends Sanctions on Armed Groups in Central African Republic for Another Year

New York: The Security Council today extended, until 31 July 2026, the sanctions targeting non-State armed groups and individuals operating in the Central African Republic.

According to EMM, the Council unanimously adopted resolution 2789 (2025), which will be issued as document S/RES/2789(2025). The 15-member organ decided that all Member States must take necessary measures to prevent the direct or indirect supply, sale, or transfer of arms and related materiel of all types to these armed groups and associated individuals. Additionally, the resolution extends the travel bans and asset freezes targeting individuals who are undermining peace in the region.

The Council also extended the mandate of the Panel of Experts, which is tasked with monitoring the implementation of the sanctions, until 31 August 2026. These measures are intended to contribute to lasting stability in the Central African Republic, particularly with critical local and general elections scheduled for next December.
