Algiers: The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, received the President of the Constitutional Court, Omar Belhadj, who had requested the audience, the Presidency of the Republic said in a press release. Belhadj handed President Tebboune a letter requesting to be relieved of the Presidency of the Constitutional Court due to personal reasons.
According to Algeria Press Service, President Tebboune accepted the resignation of Omar Belhadj, who expressed his desire to step down for personal reasons. The meeting between the two officials was requested by Belhadj himself, during which he submitted a formal letter of resignation.
In light of this development, a deliberation session of the Constitutional Court will be convened under the chairmanship of the oldest member to officially record the vacancy in the presidency. This procedure is in accordance with Article 6 of Presidential Decree 22-93, dated 8 March 2022, which outlines the organizational rules of the Constitutional Court. A copy of the delib
eration will be forwarded to President Tebboune, and the oldest member will temporarily assume the role of interim president of the Constitutional Court. A new president is expected to be appointed within fifteen days following the notification as stipulated by the decree.
