New York: The Commonwealth of Dominica reaffirmed its “full support” for the Moroccan Autonomy plan for the Sahara, considering it “the basis” for a realistic and pragmatic solution to the regional dispute. Ambassador Philbert Aaron, permanent representative of the Commonwealth of Dominica to the UN, emphasized this stance during the regular session of the UN Committee of 24, which took place from June 9-21.
According to Agence Marocaine De Presse, Ambassador Aaron stressed that Dominica fully backs the Autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom of Morocco to resolve the Sahara conflict. He highlighted that over 118 countries support the Moroccan Autonomy initiative, viewing it as a foundation for stability and peace in the region.
The diplomat expressed Dominica’s “full support” for the political process under the United Nations’ auspices to achieve a realistic, pragmatic, and mutually acceptable resolution to the Moroccan Sahara conflict. He underscored the importance of the UN Secretary-General’s role in advancing settlement efforts in line with the Security Council’s recommendations. Ambassador Aaron also mentioned the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy to the Moroccan Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, in relaunching the political process.
Additionally, the Ambassador reiterated Dominica’s call for continued engagement from Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, and the “polisario” in the roundtable process. He commended Morocco for its initiatives to foster development in the Southern provinces, which have improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and housing, thereby enhancing the quality of life and opportunities for the local population.
