Oran: President Tebboune delivered a significant address at the opening of the 11th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, emphasizing the continent’s commitment to unity and its role on the global stage. The event, held in Oran, serves as the permanent headquarters for this seminar and underscores Africa’s determination to present a unified and influential voice in international relations.
According to Algeria Press Service, President Tebboune welcomed delegates from various African Union member states, the United Nations, and other partners, declaring the seminar as a platform that goes beyond a mere meeting. He highlighted the pressing need for Africa to actively participate in shaping the international system, which he described as being at a critical juncture due to global tensions and polarisation among major powers. This polarisation, he noted, undermines global stability and marginalises Africa’s position in the international agenda.
The President pointed to Palestine as a stark example
of the disconnect between international principles and their application, stressing that such realities threaten the future of the global order. He reiterated that Africa, having endured historical injustices, refuses to be sidelined by selective international priorities.
President Tebboune acknowledged the effectiveness of the seminar’s mechanism for enhancing coordination between the African Union Peace and Security Council and African members of the UN Security Council. This coordination, he stated, is crucial for reflecting common African positions in UN resolutions concerning peace and security. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria, alongside Mozambique and Sierra Leone, has worked to ensure dignified representation and influence for Africa within this central UN body.
Looking ahead, President Tebboune expressed Algeria’s commitment to continue its efforts during the second year of its mandate in the Security Council, collaborating with Sierra Leone and Somalia. He praised the
seminar’s chosen themes, which reflect the African Union’s dedication to addressing the continent’s current challenges, such as terrorism, peacekeeping funding, and the quest for fair representation in the UN Security Council.
In concluding his speech, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to supporting efforts that amplify Africa’s unified voice. He expressed hope for the seminar’s success in making decisions that secure a better future for the continent, one where its interests are respected, its voice heard, and its aspirations realized.
