Early warning systems for cyclones urged: WMO President

Manama, Abdulla Al Mandous, the President of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) indicated the need to invest in early warning systems to provide accurate and timely information to communities that are more exposed to the risks of tropical cyclones and climate change. Al Mandous is in Bahrain to attend the 50th Session of WMO/ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones (PTC-50) hosted by the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications in collaboration with WMO. Speaking to Bahrain News Agency (BNA), the WMO President said :”We gather here in the face of a growing risk of the rising frequency and intensity of tropical cyclones.” He said: “In the year 2023 we have seen four cyclones in North Indian Ocean. The Arabian Peninsula was also not left behind. The cyclone TEJ impacted countries like Oman, Yemen, and UAE.” “We must also, invest in education and outreach programmes, empowering Citizens and communities to take charge of their safety,” Al Mandous added.
