President Tebboune calls for new world order ensuring equality, cooperation among nations

The president of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, on Tuesday in New York called for a new world order ensuring equality and cooperation among nations, expressing the wish to see a world of security and prosperity for populations worldwide, under the banner of the United Nations.

In an address at the 78th ordinary session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA), President Tebboune said Algeria had advocated from the UN forum, 50 years ago, “to address the dysfunction of the current world order,” calling for a new world order underpinned by equality between States, principles for which the United Nations was created.”

Expressing thanks and esteem for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the president of the Republic reiterated Algeria’s support for his tireless and commendable efforts to boost the role of the United Nations and meet the aspirations of peoples.

He expressed the wish to see a “world of security and prosperity for populations worldwide, under the banner of the United Nations.”

The president of the Republic said Algeria had been working for “dialogue and discussion among us to be a key claim for which our peoples have fought, to live in a world of coexistence, solidarity, cooperation and equality among all nations.”

He also stressed the impact of conflicts and crises across the world, which have reached an “unprecedented” level, with millions of displaced people and a transformation of international relations, with a shift from cooperation and convergence to confrontation.

Such a situation, the president carried on, “has put to the test international organisations and institutions in a global context marked by a multidimensional emergency.”

President Tebboune said the acceleration of international negotiations concerning the reform of the UN Security Council, according to a comprehensive and integrated approach, should be a “priority for the international community,” to reach a consensus on a real reform ensuring a “more transparent representation.”

In addition, the president of the Republic stressed “Algeria’s commitment for a joint African position” to “put an end to the historical injustice affecting the African continent.
