Life imprisonment for five people for murdering American in Baghdad

The Iraqi Ministry of Interior on Thursday said an Iraqi court issued a life imprisonment sentence against five people, including an Iranian national, for convicting them of the murder of American citizen Stephen Truell in Baghdad last year.

The ministry said in a statement that an intelligence team affiliated with it was able last year, days after Truell’s killing in Baghdad, to identify the perpetrators and those associated with them and arrest them after obtaining judicial approvals.

It explained that the five arrested perpetrators were four Iraqis and one Iranian. They confessed during the investigation after being confronted with overwhelming evidence of their crime.

The ministry added that the convicts were handed a life sentence.

An intelligence team is currently searching and investigating four other defendants accused of involvement in this crime.

In November last year, Truell was killed when gunmen shot him with silencer-equipped weapons while driving with his family in the crowded Karrada area in central Baghdad.
