President of the Republic’s visit to Russia to boost strong, historical relations between two countries

MOSCOW-The President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized Thursday the strong, historical relations between Algeria and Russia, stressing that his visit to this country will enable him to deepen bilateral dialogue on certain issues.

During talks with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, which took place at the Kremlin Palace, President Tebboune said that his visit to Russia “reflects the strong friendship and quality of relations that have existed between the two countries for 60 years”. Algeria, he said, “is committed to these relations.”

The President of the Republic also affirmed that “consultation with friends is necessary in all circumstances.”

“We agree that the international situation is very difficult. We wish to accelerate our membership of the BRICS group, in view of its great advantages for our economy,” he continued.

After reaffirming Algeria’s firm stance on the need for peaceful solutions to the crises in Libya and Mali, the President of the Republic stressed that Algeria and Russia shared “the same position” on the Libyan issue.

Libya “is a friendly country for Russia and a brotherly country for Algeria. We work for its stability and security,” he said.

President Tebboune expressed Algeria’s conviction that the crisis in Mali “cannot be resolved by force, but through the Algiers Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation.”

The President of the Republic also welcomed Russia’s support for Algeria’s accession as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
